The Bakery Association states that the prices of bakery products other than bread should be increased by at least five rupees. Its chairman N.K. Jayawardena says that the prices of many essential items for bakery products such as margarine, eggs, farm oil and sugar have gone up. Recently the price of an egg was reduced by two rupees.
However, he said that this was not enough and that the government should allow the import of eggs even if there were plans to do so. He emphasizes that the price of a kilo of margarine which was Rs. 300 has now increased to Rs. 400 and therefore the prices of bakery products other than bread should be increased.
