Minister of Plantation Ramesh Pathirana stated that the President is scheduled to visit the area due to the controversy over a road near the Sinharaja Forest.

Responding to a question raised by a journalist, the Minister said,

“President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s attention is focused on this. It has been reported that he hopes to personally monitor this matter. This is a sensitive ecological zone so great care must be taken in carrying out development activities.

However, a significant number of people have been living in the village called Lankagama for a long time. The government has also focused on providing the necessary transport facilities to those people. It is under this that the development of this road has commenced.

The President has called for reports from the Road Development Authority and relevant environmental agencies to meet the needs of the people in a manner that does not harm the ecosystem, the Cabinet Spokesman added.
